How to Keep Your Dog Safe in Hot Weather?

Summer is a wonderful time to enjoy the sun, go on nature walks, and relax outdoors with your four-legged friend. But high temperatures can be dangerous — not just for humans, but for dogs too. Here are some simple but important tips to help keep your dog cool, safe, and healthy during hot weather.
1. Choose walk times wisely
Avoid walking your dog during the hottest parts of the day (between 11 AM and 5 PM). Instead, go for walks early in the morning or later in the evening when it's cooler.
2. Check the ground temperature
Pavement and asphalt can get extremely hot and burn your dog’s paws. A good rule of thumb: place your hand on the surface — if you can’t hold it there for 5 seconds, it’s too hot for your dog.
3. Always provide fresh water
Hydration is key. Make sure your dog has constant access to clean, fresh water. When going outside, bring a water bottle and a portable bowl for your dog.
4. Never leave your dog in a car
Even with the windows cracked, a car can become dangerously hot in just minutes. It can be fatal — never take the risk.
5. Provide shade and cool spaces
When outdoors, ensure your dog has access to shade. Indoors, keep the space well-ventilated or use fans. Cooling mats can also be helpful.
6. Watch for signs of overheating
Excessive panting, lethargy, drooling, disorientation, or vomiting may be signs of heatstroke. If you notice any of these, move your dog to a cool area, offer water, and contact a vet immediately.
7. Opt for heat-friendly activities
Swimming, playing in the shade, or taking calm walks in wooded areas are great alternatives to intense play in direct sunlight.
